just checking in---- jasmine, did you find out your results yet? I hope they are lower for you- my office uses a scale of 16 and less for normal prolactin- I know other offices use different measures- but I hope yours is back to 10 or less. I haven't had mine checked now in about 4 weeks- it went from 5.9 to 6.3- I wonder if they will check it again soon. It's been 3 mos since I started taking it- and honestly, I was hoping to have become pregnant by now. It's so frustrating! The level came down right away- so I 'm just surprised it hasn't happened yet. Especially since they can't find anything else wrong, I thought for sure this would be it. they also have me starting progesterone suppositories starting 2 dpo- I am at 5 dpo right now. Does anybody have positive results out there? Brooke

Hi V!! I had been off of bc for 1 year, ttc as well. After I felt that I was turning into a boy.... I went to the doc and had high prolactin as well. Coming off bc does that. In January 06' my prolactin was 83. I was devastated and made to wait for a ct scan to rule out tumors. I also started taking chasteberry, melatonin, and maca because I heard it lowered prolactin. Now it is April 25th and I found out on the 20th that my prolactin went down to 8.3!!! It does not hurt to try herbals before taking drugs. I am so lucky that they worked for me as I felt I had lost all hope. It has taught me to just be patient with ttc. High prolactin means lower dopamine in the body. Taking melatonin at night raises dopamine. High dopamine= low prolactin. Good luck and relax. High prolactin is reversible and treatment is very successful.......;)

I hope somebody on here has good news soon. I am 9 dpo today- I will know next Wednesday (even though I always know a couple days before). I have been monitored with ultrasounds each month to watch my eggs- I had a 24 mm follicle this month- and ovulated on day 14. We were surprised- and had to skip IUI because it happened so fast. I ovulate 28-32 days so I don't know when it can happen. They said parlodel would make me ovulate more consistently. So far, it really hasn't. Jan was day 14, Feb was Day 16, Mar Day 16, April Day 14- so who knows! I just want to be pregnant- I'm going to be 32 in August and sometimes i start to panic thinking time is going too fast!!!

But still it made me upset- this makes it 16 cycles now after m/c- I'm feeling so down- I just feel like it's never going to happen. I had so much hope in parlodel- I hope someone on here has good news soon-I need a positive to help me to keep going.

Hello Everyone, I believe finding this website was a blessing in disguise. I wanted to quick share my story and hopefully find someone who is going through the same thing. I was 16 when I went to my doctor with concerns because my period had just quit. He advised at that time that I was going though changes weight gain / loss etc. And that it was pretty normal for a teen to have an irregular period. Well after a year I went to my Gynecologist where he finally pulled blood work. Well I found out that my levels were in the 1000 and he ordered a MRI. The results were in and I had a pituitary adenoma and it was classified as a Macro. I was scheduled for surgery in March and was scared out of my mind as I was only 17 years old. The tumor was too large to go though my nose so I was scheduled for the 8 hour brain surgery. I am happy to report that all went well and I recovered in two weeks. I didn’t get my period back naturally after my surgery but I would if I took birth control pills. So jump ahead 11 years and I am now starting the process of getting pregnant. I am still going through some retesting of my levels and I have found out that I am Hypothyroid. I have been put on medication to bring up those levels and I am working on the next steps to getting pregnant. I am wondering if someone who has the similar situation that has been able to get pregnant?

Hello, I just found this website and am so happy to see all of your progress. I am going to start Bromocriptine this weekend and am a bit worried about its side effects. I've been diagnosed with a mild case of hyperprolactinemia- my doctor says it is just mild enough that I will need treatment. I tested negative for a pituitary adenoma. Any feeback on the bromocriptine and how long it could take before I become pregnant?

holland - May 4

Woodchuck, I have heard that problems with prolactin/pituitary hormones can be early signals of thyroid issues. So, this doesn't sound uncommon... it also sounds as if your issues with your thyroid can be taken care of. I would stay positive about this. What I have gathered from my reproductive endocriniologist is that he says..." of all the infertility issues to have... a high prolactin level is what you want to have, it could be a lot worse." I'm just happy knowing I can conceive it may just take a while and I may have to take bromocriptine each time I want to concieve... that is alot better than some of the other issues we could be suffering from. Good luck. If you're in the hands of an endocrinologist you are right where you need to be.

holland thanks for the encouragement. I am still going through everything to find out what steps I have to take before I can try and get pregnant. I will keep you posted on the progress as I am sure it will be a long one!!

Hello, glad I foudn this section. I finally saw my obgyn about my 7dpo b/w. the u/s and DH's S/A. All was great except my prolactin was 34. I just did a retest 3 days ago and am waiting for the results. My cycle ranges from 27 to 31 days, my lp is 15 days normally but the last 3 months they have dropped to 13, then 14, who knows what it will be this month, I am 14dpo today. According to the tests and charts I ovulate just fine, my progesterone was fine too. I do get very sharp stabbing pains through my left breast during the luteal phase. Would that be caused by high prolactin?
If my cycles are regular, I ovulate okay, then how would a high prolactin level affect my ability to get pregnant? Does it affect implantation?

holland - May 12

Rachel5-
Shooting pains do occur in some women (not me) when you have high prolactin levels. Sometimes bromocriptene, cabergoline or dostinex are prescribed to reduce this pain and get the levels maintained. I must say, you have half the battle covered by the fact that you are ovulating and have menstrual cyles. But, here is key... when your prolactin levels are high (as they are when you are breastfeeding, and for the most part cannot concieve) the high prolactin keeps your uterine wall from being viable to implant. This is so important. I have just started bromocriptine because my levels are high enough that I'm not ovulating or having a period. So, if the levels can be lowered, not only will i have a period, when I do concieve the egg can implant into the uterus. It's actually such an amazing process. You will probably have an MRI to rule out a pituitary tumor called a microadenoma (not a big deal) if you do or don't have one you will be treated with one of those drugs and your prolactin levels will hopefully decrease. The most positive thing is that you ARE ovulating and having a period so, you CAN concieve, now, you just have to prepare your body for the second half of
conception- and that is to faciliate implantation. Hope this helps... I feel like a doctor after all the tests and stuff I've been through. It will all be fine!

Rachel5 - May 13

holland - thank you so much for that information! I have been complaining so much about those shooting pains in the left breast and my GP/OBGYn say it's normal PMS but I don't know that they are right. I can't wait to see the RE who I am sure will see it in a different light. I alos start getting intense cramping at around 8dpo and to me this seems to be a bit early for my body to prepare to shed the uterline lining as that is implantation time. As you have mentioned, maybe the prolactin is affecting the lining and its ability to allow for implant.
