Sometimes the HSG will be painful especially if you have a blockage. I have endometriosis and had blockage in my tube, when the doctor started I had taken a percocet before the procedure and it was painful for me. When he was finished I sat up and fainted from the pain. A lot of people say that when they had theirs done they felt a little cramping but nothing unbearable. It just depends on what is going on.
I did get pregnant right away after my HSG but for me I had a miscarriage. After my third HSG I found it was easier for me to get pregnant but now we have to find out why I can't carry past 12 weeks.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi all, I am new to this board and to any board really. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for almost a year and have been married just as long. He just turned 33 and I just turned 32 so our clocks are ticking. Neither of us has any children and we desperately want children. Well I didn't think I would ever have to go through so much to have children, prior to marriage I've always been so worried about preventing it, it never dawned on me I would be fighting to get pregnant.
Well our troubles really seemed to start before we were even TTC last year. After an annual pap smear I was told I had a large fibroid, after doing a sonosalpingogram and an MRI it was determined my fibroid was 9 cm large. My options were a myectomy which would potentially remove too much of my uterus to ever be able to carry a child, or a UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) which seemed a safer method although not always recommended for couples who want to conceive later. The thought was that my uterus would be able to repair itself quickly at my age.
Well the UFE did help with the very heavy bleeding and long painful periods I had been having for years. But we didn't start TTC until October 2011 and my UFE was July 2011. At first we were just not preventing, hoping it would just happen, after about 6 months of nothing happening, I began going on line and researching, I began charting and using OPKs. Well I knew I was at ovulating so I wasnt sure why we weren't getting pregnant.
I went back for my annual pap smear and follow up to my UFE last month and was told that my fibroid was still there. With that being said I told my GYN that we were TTC and he suggested getting an HSG to see how my tubes were and if the fibroid was acting as an IUD.
Well I did the HSG at the very end of August and it was determined that both my tubes were blocked, and I had severe scar tissue and adhesions. My GYN has referred me to an RE whom I will see in a month (only time I could get an appointment). Well my cycle which is usually like clockwork, 28-29 days was 5 days late this time. The first one after my HSG. Matter of fact it just showed itself. :-( I only told my husband this morning that I was 5 days late and I was hopeful. I had read on line where people got preganant right after, or that even though their HSG showed both tubes blocked they still went on to conceive naturally soon after an HSG. I know it was wishful thinking, but we want a child so desperately.
My GYN said based on my HSG results that IVF could be my only option. I don't know where we are going to get the money to do it if it comes to that. I am so disheartened and don't know what else to do right now. I am so sad and frustrated and mad. Any helpful advice is appreciated.

Hi antinetty,
New to this forum but registered to reply - so good to reach out & use forums, personally I've found a lot of support over the last 4 years since before my son was conceived & now ttc no2. Keep looking around as it's worth hunting for the right forum.
Anyway, the fibroid... Wow. I'm in a completely different situation - unexplained fertility after 2 yrs ttc. Just had an HSG so online wondering if I can be hopeful. We are considering IVF as don't want to wait any longer. It will go on credit cards, but now that we know how much it is, we can choose that debt investment. We do have a mortgage but there is equity in the house too & we don't plan to be here more than 5 years...
My advice to you is:
1) do all your IVF research now - where, how much, what will it take
2) do a budget
3) keep trying in the meantime
4) when you have 1&2, sit down with your dh & discuss the facts & whether IVF is actually an option
5) don't rush into making a decision, do all your research BEFORE you think you'll be ready to decide anything
Good luck!

Hi ladies,
I am new to this forum. Me and the hubby have been TTC over a year. Just had HSG done on 11/2/12 CD10. The procedure was a little uncomfortable. Didn't need to take aspirin afterwards. Had weird spotting 11/17. My period always falls on the last week of the month. Has anyone else had spotting after the procedure?

Hey ladies! I would like to tell my story since I see a lot of uncertainy from some of u. I am 24 yrs old, married with extreme irregular periods. I can skip months of having no periods and also can bleed for up to three or so weeks. I have been pregnant twice and have had two children. My first child is four and my other passed away after a month. So I started trying to get pregnant again. Long story Short, I went to two doctors, one said I had pcos and the other said I was fine. After 6 months of doctors they gave me a hsg. It was okay for me and I didn't take any medicine before or after. My tubes were fine and they told me that if by december I didn't get pregnant they to come back. I gave up. 6 months later and december 2nd I took a pg test and it is positive. I am pregnant. Sometimes when u stop trying it happens. Baby dust to all. I cant wait foe everyones happiness! God bless.

Hi Ladies,
I am new to this forum infact, new to any forum. My DH have been trying for over 2 years and I'm only 24. My one sister has 3 kids and my other has 6 so I figured it would be a matter of looking at my husband at the right time but it hasn't been that easy. I have been pregnant before but miscarried at about 8 weeks. I had an HSG last month and they said one tube was blocked but later said it was fine. I started Clomid earlier this month and we're monitoring with OPK's to find out when we can do IUI with my DH's sperm. The hardest part of this whole process is that if Clomid doesn't work we're going to be out of options. My husband's getting out of the military soon and we won't have the money for IVF. My husband is supportive but leaves the decision to quit or keep going to me. That is sometimes more frustrating than anything. The absolute worst part is the waiting, I don't want to get too excited because the disappointment of the Clomid and IUI not working will be too much.

I had an HSG after alot of other testing. Me and my husband have been trying for 2 years. Everything is normal so far. No scarring no tube blockage. These comments give me high hope and my husband has been out of town for 3 weeks and on Christmas eve he comes home on my Ovulation day. I pray for a Christmas miracle. I hope the HSG works. Wish me luck. Nothing has worked so far. :(

Hi,am new to this forum. Me and my husband have been trying to concieve for seven months now and i must tell you the highs and then the lows could be very frustrating.Decided to try for at least six months, then if no pregnancy go for a HSG test.I was hoping i would get pregnant before the end of the year so i would not have to do the HSG test as my friend says it is a rather painful experience.Twice i had come so close to doing it but decided against it. when you don't get pregnant and your cycle is very regular like mine you cant help but wonder if all is well with your tubes of course! my last period came 7 days late so i kept hoping i was pregnant when it eventually came 7 days late i decided to go for the HSG test yesterday. Dear husband is not in town so had to go do it alone,it was a very painful experience for me.Especially when the dye was being shut into my tubes, i could not help but cry out in pain. The radiologist and attendant were both kind and patient with me but i must confess my threshold for pain is quite high yet i had a terrible experience. My tubes were both open and my doctor says most peoplewho come for a HSG get pregnant soon after the test as the dye clears out your tube of the cobwebs and any stuff obstructing free movement of the egg and sperm.I still have very terrible cramping after the test could not bend, lie or walk well. Couldnt even sleep, the pain after the test was very excruciating. My hopes are high and i pray to God i get pregnant this month. That would be a very good belated christmas present, because i have prayed so hard for a baby.Baby dust to everyone TTC like me,i wish us luck.I will keep you all posted.

Hello ladies,
I haven't been on the forum since November. Since that time, my GYN doctor said that the HSG was in conclusive. So, I gave up. Had the tubal reversal 6/28/10, HSG was done in Nov. My period came on 1/27 and ended 2/3. I thought I would have a long cycle and would see mary (period) at the end of Feb or first week of March. No mary, went to buy pregnancy test and just did it this morning. Lo and behold... 2 positive lines! I was floored, and I still cannot believe that I am positive. 43 and preggo! Don't give up ladies, God works in his own time. I am sending out blessings and sprinkling baby dust for you all!
