i have been on metformin for about 3mos. and am not making much progress. i was just finally diagnosed with pcos (which i suspected was the problem) after ttc for 1yr. in the past year i have only had 8 periods and the last one ( while on the met) came after 70days! my dr now wants to start me on clomid, but i just found out my insurance doesn't cover it! so many roadblocks, but i'm still trying to stay positive!

I was dx with pcos in February of this year. Which I know now that I have had my whole adult life. I have never had a normal cycle and would go months without a period and then when I did have one I would have very heavy bleeding and clots so bad that I could not leave my house!! My doctor started me on Metformin 2000 mg a day on May 17. In June I had a period and it was normal. This month I had another period and was normal (28 day cycle). Now I am waiting to O after taking my first round of clomid 50 mg. with the Met. I am on cd 12. As for as the Met is concern I haven't had a lot of problems with it until this month. Been having a lot of GI problems and staying in the bathroom a lot lately. And I thought the bathroom trips wouldn't start until AFTER I am pregnant!!??? LOL Sending Baby Dusts we all get our little miracle soon!!!

my story is very similar. i'm certain i've had pcos all along- never been regular, missed almost a year before. but for me when i do get my period it is very light, just like a heavy spot and only for 3-4 days. it irritates me that i was never diagnosed until recently. now i'm on 1000mg of met and it makes me totally sick to my stomach and still having irregular cycles! it is reassuring to hear from others with the same problems.

Layla, you need to be taking your basal body temperatures to see if you are ovulating. If you ovulate, you will have a noticable rise in temperature. That way, they'll know if the metformin is doing any good, or if they should try to do something else to help you.

Hello! I have been ttc for over 6 yrs. now. My last period was in April and last week my GYN started me on Metformin. I started on Thursday and today I started spotting. Is it normal to start so soon after taking the medication. Also he wants me to start with 2 (500mg) tab. every day but because of the side effects i started my self out with one. My ? is should I stay on the 500 mg a day or take 2 a day on my second week? If i'm already spotting should the 1- 500mg tablet be enough to get my cycles regular?

Hello. New to this site and just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant! I got diagnosed with PCOS just on June 1st and started on Glucophage (generic Metformin) 850 mg twice/day. Fiance and I were not trying to get pregnant, but now this is a wonderful surprise. I am scared though, my OB said STOP taking the Glucophage asap, but I have read so many horror stories about miscarriages after stopping Met. Is there anyone out there who stopped Met early in the first trimester and carried full term? I am really worried about losing the pregnancy since it is still so early. I was NOT ovulating at all before the Mat and had about 4 periods a year. Any advice would be great--I hate to be worrying so much!

I am on Metformin and diognosed as pcos. In the past my period is always irregular. I can go a year without it. It was very uncomfortable to not to have it. I am taking 750mg of Metformin and I was surprised that after taking it for just 6 days my period came on the 7th day. This Met is really worked on me! I just need to wait when I would ovulate for my next cycle. I have no problems of taking it just a slight diarhea first day of it. Good luck to all of us who are trying to conceive! :-)

I recently went to a specialist after dealing with PCOS for years and I was boosted to 1500 mg of metformin and 100mg of clomid and I got sick. I went to the emergency room last night I got inflammation of my gall bladder which now scares me. Because I need these meds to help me get pregnant, but I also don't wanna damage any internal organs as well. But I am decreasing my metformin dosage down to 750mg a day instead I think that was just too much too soon.

I do not have PCOS, but my doctor put me on Metformin. My husband and I have been together for five years, and have not conceived. We have went through one round of Clomid/HCG/IUI, but even though there were three nice follicles, we did not conceive. This month, we tried Clomid again, but did not have the same response. On cycle day thirteen, the eggs were not very big, and my lining was a bit thin. On cycle day fifteen, there was only one somewhat developed follicle. The doctor recommended not doing the HCG/IUI. He started me on Metformin, on cycle day thirteen. He talked about taking one 500mg a day for a week, two a day for a week, and then finally, three a day. I took one 500mg with dinner, and felt fine, so I took two the next night. I still felt pretty good. So on the third night, I took all three, I was still okay, until after I had a bowl of cereal with milk, and a glass of orange juice the next morning. I was really sick to my stomach, I couldn't go to work. That night, I cut back to the two pills. The next day, I did not feel as bad, but have been trying to eat differently, toast, pretzels, ginger ale. Next time I start my period, the doctor mentioned trying something different, taking Letrozole instead of Clomid, while still taking the Metformin. He said the Metformin could help us conceive on our own, without Clomid or IUI. And if we do get pregnant, I should keep taking the Metformin, because of risk of miscarriage. In the mean time, the doctor said the follicle from this round of Clomid could come out in the next couple days, so my husband and I are giving it our best shot to conceive, without the HCG/IUI.

I started taking 1 - 500mg dose of metformin May of 2004 then upped to 2 a day in July of 2004. Then I got bumped to 3 a day in mid-August and wham! I got pregnant right away. However, I miscarried 3 weeks after I got a blood test confirming the pregnancy. I was about 5 weeks along.
Side effects for me: nausea if I don't snack enough, gas, and diarrhea. Lovely, right?

Hi! I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed 5 months ago with pcos. I have not gotten my period since May. I just started Met. My dr. said take 1 500mg the first week, and then each week add a pill until I reach 1500mg. He said I should give it 3 months to see how it works on me. I am overweight, so I hope I lose some weight with this. I am up to 2 pills a day and I have to say the side effects are manageable. I'm just wondering when will I get a period? If I just started how soon will I bleed? Any answers?

Suzan - August 4

HI I just wanted to share my experience with Met, I started it at the end of july I was prescribed 500mg 3x a day. I didn't follow that at first because I was very afraid of the list of side effects. I up'ed it to 3 a day starting monday and from that point on i have been very sick!!! I feel like I have constant motion sickness, headaches, diarrhea that keeps me up all night! I am eating less because I am always nauseaus, I only eat a bit so I can take my meds and that's all, then I also take clomid and that makes me dizzy too, I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for the possible outcome, I keep forcing myself to take this stuff because i know what it will result in a baby!!!! so I will continue and hopefully the side effects will go away and turn into preg side effects. baby dust to all of us~~~~

Kim - August 6

I started met about 6 wks ago. My cycle came right on time. This was my first time ever being this happy to see my cycle. I will start ttc soon. Wish me luck. Is it me or do you weigh the consequences of eating foods high in fat and sugar?

Sarah - August 8

Barbara, I hope everything is alright with you. My GP told me when I was about 6 weeks pregnant to stop taking Metformin and we lost the baby. Our OB/GYN told us that could have been the cause and that new and recent studies are showing a link between miscarrying and stopping metformin. So I would get a second opinion!! And I hope you keep your baby!!
