Hi, I'm new here but I had a question of my own. Does anyone know how to tell if Vitex is helpuing you or hurting you? I just started taking it and last night I hade cramps as if I was getting my period. My cramps are pretty bad. I am dot suposed to get my PD until the 16th so I am alittle scared. What should I do??

I also had high prolactin that was discovered after I made complaints of irreg periods. MRI found pituitary tumor and I opted for surgery. My prolactin regulated within 3 days of surgery. That was 6 months ago and now hubby and I are going to try and get pregnant. I highly recommend surgical intervention.

Me again: Wanted to clarify that I am not knocking taking the meds rather than surgery. In my case the tumor had gotten so large it was on the optic nerve and I was having troble with vision. Once the surgeon went in he mentioned that the tumor had begun to hemmorhage with fluids seeping about. The neurosurgeon was thankful I opted for the surgery so quickly as my optic nerve would have been damaged. What is interesting is that my prolactin only got to 26 which is not too bad but the tumor was large. But like I stated prior, once it was removed all hormone levels went to normal in 3 days and I do not have to take any meds.

Kelly, HI
I was told by my obg. that I should not do the surgery because I wanted to have a baby. And my Endocrinologist wants to keep me on the meds.

Hi all. My husband and I are trying for a baby and I was diagnosed with high prolactin (353) and a pituitary tumor. I've been on dostinex for almost a month now and still no period. How long should it take? I start to get panicked and worry that I'll never be able to conceive. Thanks for any info you can give.

Kendra- How often are youtaking dostinex and how many mgs? I have the pituitary adenoma and was at 107 prolactin. I started on Bromo and after 2 weeks had extreme nausea and went off it and switched to dostinex. I am happy to say that I got my period yesterday for the first time in 5 months after being on dostinex for a week. BUt I am taking it 2 times a week and 2.5 mg each dosage. I started my fertiliuty monitor again and hopefully will ovulate this month. I was on the pill for 15 years and think that it masked the signs of high prolactin since it forces you to get regular periods even if you have high prolactin. Have you had your prolactin tested agin recently since taking the dostinex?

Kendra,
Every body is different but I would say that sometimes it may take a month or two. What did you doctor tell you. It did not take me but a month. while on bromo to start. But like I say now I am on both. So just give it time to work. My big thing now is to get pregnant. My mother told me the other day to JUST RELAX!! and it will happen.

Hi Bridgette, My endo and neurosurgeon were the exact opposite They encouraged me to get pregnant as soon as my levels were normal. Since my surgey my prolactin has remained a 8. They also did not hesitate to perform the surgery when they realized I wanted to start a family. They said surgery would be the quickest route to take since the meds may take a few months to level out the elevated prolactin levels.

Rachael, I am on a total of .50 mg a week (.25 mg pills twice a week). I'm guessing my doc needs to up the dosage? I go back on Monday for a recheck. I hate needles so I sure am looking forward to it... ;-)
Thanks Bridgette, I'll try to relax. I'm glad I found this site and can talk with other women going through the same thing. I just need some patience...

Kelly: Hi, just wanted to ask about the surgery, how was it done and how long did it take? I have a tumor and my current prolactin level is 141. I'm not on any meds but I have an appointment with my gyne on tuesday to find out what I should take. I'm desperate to start a family!!

I think you understood my wrong. My obgy. is working with me to get pregnant. but she does not want me to do the surgery. Just take meds. to level out and then get pregnant. my Endoc. is just forgetful every time I see her she says if you are not taking any for protection you need to because the Meds. are going to make you fertile and I just have to remind her that I want to have a baby.she did tell me this last time that when I get pregnant to let her know at once because they will have to stop the meds.

Krystnya, The surgery is actually done through the nose. They go in the right side nostril and basically break the septum and push through the sinus cavity until the tumor is in site. Then it is removed and they make an incision into your stomach and take a small amount of fat to fill the empty hole where the tumor once was. I was in the hospital for 2 days. The worse thing is that you cannot blow your nose for a few weks until it is all healed. There was some pain and swelling and the headache afterwards is pretty severe. But I would go through it again in a heartbeat just to have the normal prolactin level just days afterwards. Surgey took less than 2 hours.
Bridgette I understood you. Your doc wants to see you get pregnant but does not want you to have surgery but remain on the meds.

Hi Kelly, thanks for your reply. I've just had my follow up with my gyne and apparently my prolactin levels are normal. They way it was measured was in micro something-arother units (cant remember what it was called) anyway normal is upto 500 and mine is only 141 so its ok. I've been prescribed Clomid. I start straight away so hopefully things will get moving soon! :-P

Stacey - August 10

OK I am worried as my doctor said my level is 950 and you guys are all talking about levels not in the hundreds??? is there a way to convert it or is my level 950 as she said below 450 was safe?

Rachael - August 11

I was told normal prolactin is under 19. I have the pituitary adenomo and had levels at 109 a month ago. I started on bromocriptine which I couldn't tolerate and switched to dostinex (.5 mg twice a week). I just got the new blood results back and am very happy to say its at 7.5!! My OB called to tell me that since I just finished my first period in 5 months he expects that I could get pregnant now any month. So I put my husband on an every third day schedule (if you know what I mean ;) Amber- are you still out there? Curious how you are doing??

Rachael - August 11

Kendra- I think you should up the dosage. I'm on .5 mg of dostinex twice a week and it brought my level from 109 to 7.5 in a month! If your levels are higher than what I had it seems like you would need a higher dosage. This medicine does work! You just need to get the dosage right.
