Hi sara yes my periods stopped about 8 years before but the thing was i had not long had a contraceptive coil fitted and a doctor (not my usual one) said that it was to blame so i didnt think anymore of it. It wasnt until i had the coil removed for good 2 years ago my periods didnt return and so a blood test was done and the doctor told me that he was positive with such a high level that i must have a pituatry tumour. I was admitted to hospital immediatly and my endo said he had never heard of such a high level himself, he normally dealt with patients with levels of no more than 200 and i felt absolutly fine, i was in hospital for 3 weeks while several tests and 3 MRI's were done and to everyones amazment there was no tumour just the gland itself was very swollen. I have been on dostinex for 2 years now and still struggling to keep the level down, the thing that does my head in the most was that i actually felt better before this was found out.

Hi again, is dostinex something like parlodel (bromocriptine)? I'm on this drug right now and I hate it. I always get nausea pretty bad. Most times I have to take a anti-nausea pill 1/2 hr before I take the pill. My doctor wants me to take it for 4 months. My prolactin is at 25 right now but we were given the go ahead for in vitro. I also have a cyst on my lt ovary that has to clear first. Hopefully when I start the BC pills they will help with that. No wonder your pituitary gland was swollen, it was working overtime secreting prolactin. I'm glad your levels dropped and hopefully will continue to do so. Baby dust to you.

yes it is pretty much the same thing but it has the advantages of only being taken twice per week and generally has fewer side effects than bromocriptine.

If your having such a bad time with the bromo pills i would suggest you ask to be switched to dostinex (cabergoline).

Hello all! I have been TTC for 6 mos now my prolactin levels are up at 117 but I am having regular periods. My OBGYN just found cis on both my overies and I just started Dostinex 2 weeks ago. Could someone give e some answers to this. Will have a good chance of getting pregnant on the meds?

antoniac - March 12

You will have a much better chance of concieving with taking the meds than without them chuck.

Hi, I will ask my doctor about dosinex, although I live in Canada and it may be fda approved for the US only but I will look into it.

antoniac - March 13

Im not sure but i seem to think it was available in the US before it was available here.
Just been to the docs today and my prolactin level has jumped back up to 721 so im feeling a bit down again now i guess il have to wait a while before ttc now.
The thing that ticks me off the most is that my doc doesnt really know anything about this condition and i only get to see my endo every 6 months which is not good in my opinion especially when i have questions that noone seems to be able to answer grrrrrrrrrr

Hello everyone, I've been ttc #2 for 3 yrs now. I recently went to an RE (specialist) and they just found I had a high prolactin level of 40.6 then they repeated it and it was 44 I Just started bromocriptine 2.5 mg every night. I get blood work in 2 weeks to see if it has gone down. I was wondering how soon did someone get pregnant after starting on this med. I have regualar periods and I do O but it may not be a strong enough one since I havent got pregnant yet. Help....

Hi lovely-1, I have heard of people getting pregnant when their prolactins lowered to a normal level.I've been ttc 3 1/2 yrs with #1 with no luck. Just recently my prolactin was at it's highest for me at 36. (I was always around 21) I went on bromocriptine for 2 weeks and it lowered to 25 but my doctor decided to keep me on it for 4 months and they upped the dose. I'm not waiting any longer for it to lowere so DH and I are starting in vitro soon. Have you had an MRI of your brain/pituitary gland to rule out any abnormalities?

Lovely-1 - March 15

sara- I did not have an MRI to rule out a tumor, I guess the RE said they want to see if it goes down on bromo first in 2 weeks and if it goes up or stays the same they'll probably do an MRI. I dont have any of the other symptoms like missed period, headaches, or leaking breast.... I guess I'll have to wait for 2 weeks from today to see what my levels are....

Sara - March 15

Hi again, I had an MRI about 3 weeks and there was a microadenoma on my pituitary. So needless to say I started the bromocriptine. How do find the side effects? I get nausea pretty bad but yesterday was the 1st day I took my full doses and I never got nauseated. I was so happy. I'll try again today, if I do get sick I will taper the doses back then go from there. It's really hard to take the recommended doses b/c I work full time and I really don't want to be sick.

Lovely-1 - March 16

You know what, I didnt really feel any side effects. Well I felt nausea a few times but after I ate something I was fine and it wasnt bad nausea. I'm taking the full 2.5mg and it's been 3 days. I guess well see what the next few days bring.

Hi, I've been taking the parlodel for almost 2 months & my prolactin is in the normal ranges. I was high as 36 and now I'm at 14. I was so happy to hear that.

hi ladies....

I can shed some hope on all of you....last year in March I was diagnosed with a high prolaction level after ttc without success. I had a negative mri and was put on parlodel 2x day. I got pregnant sometime the end of March...and had a great pregnancy with a beautiful baby girl. There is hope. My doc said it would be months before I got pregnant and he was wrong. I never even got a period while on the parlodel...I must have just ovulated and gotten preggo that same month. I prayed a lot....keep the faith and it will work!! If you have questions...feel free to ask. jess

Hi jlp, that's great, congrats on your little one. I did have an MRI, and I have an microadenoma. The meds work well & my prolactin is now in the normal ranges & my periods are beginning to get regular. My day 3 bloodwork I just had was FSH-6, prolactin-14, LH-9. Because of my LH spiking at the wrong times, my dh & I are trying IVF. Back in Dec, I was getting ready to try IUI with clomid but again by LH spiked to 14 on day 8. So it was a no go for the IUI. I'm getting a cyst rechecked this week & hopefully everything will be a go for the IVF.
