I have had nipple discharge for some time, but I didn't bring it up to the doc, I am ttc again now, I have had children before. My cycles are longer (35 days) but regular. Do you think my prolactin levels could be to high? Should I get that checked out?

Are the pitituary tumors cancer?? Did any of you get a few dark hairs on the neck and face. and when plucked out grew back? I also have white nipple discharge but it is worse out of the right side. I am so scared about this. HELP!!!!

Can someone tell me the symptoms of the prolactin levels?

Nicole - July 1

No, the tumors are not cancer. They're actually benign. About 10% of people actually have these tumors. You don't even need surgery! You just need to get on meds. I'm taking Dostinex. I have no side effects, and it seems to be working. I don't have the pituitary tumor..just high prolactin levels. The discharge is also common, but will go away once you are on meds. As far as dark hairs to be plucked, most women get these. You might look into seeing if you have PCOS if you have lots of these hairs. Other signs of pcos is irregular or lack of menstrual periods, being overweight, moodiness. Anyways, definitely don't worry. These problems are VERY easy to take care of. Also, the signs of high prolactin levels are sensitive nipples, the milky discharge, lack of a sexual drive, lack of periods, infertility..etc. But really, you just need to get a blood test. It's not as bad as it seems. :)

My doctor justtold me that my prolactin is at 117 and that normal is below 23. He wants me to go on Parlodel and have a pituitary MRI to r/o a tumor. Has anyone been on this drug and no about success rate or side effects??

does anyone know if there is a more natural method for lowering high prolactin levels?

Amber - July 6

I am happy to say this...I HAD high prolactin levels for the past 2 years. First the doctors put me on Bromocriptine (which did not lower my levels) now I am on Dostinex (cabergoline) and after only a month and a half on this medication, my prolactin levels are down to 9! :) Obviously it is fast acting and my suggestion if you need to be on medication. And the bonus is that you only have to take it 2 times a week rather than everynight with food on the Bromocriptine. :))

Questions: I was told that I have a pituitary tumor and that my prolactin levels are at 70. I have been on bromocriptine for about 2 weeks and wondered how long before it starts to work. Can the tumor disapper or is the medication for a life time? Is pregnancy still a possibility? I'm so worried I won't hava a normal life.

Amber - July 7

Hi Nicky,
I also have a pitutary tumor and my life is pretty much normal other than the annoying visits to the specialist and the medications. It's nothing to be freaked out over and it can be easily taken care of with the proper meds. Like I said in a previous posting, I took bromocriptine for a couple of years and it didn't lower my prolactin. Dostinex is the new medication that I am on and in only a month my prolactin is perfect. Normally the tumors are not removed but are EASILY treated for! Don't worry about it!! :)) If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Rachael, my prolactin was high, but not that high. I have been using natural progesterone cream after O each month. It has helped with symptoms and lowering prolactin. Prolactin and progesterone suppress each other. So if you have high prolactin, you have low progesterone and vica versa. Increase prog. and you decrease prolactin. Hope this helps.

My last prolactin level was 39...that was a month ago. I should get rechecked Friday and hopefully it will go down. I have not had a period for mo and been on dostinex for 1 month. Has anyone else gone this long w/o AF and still got pg? Does anyone know of any good support groups online? Thanks.

Merlee! I have been talking about Progesterone cream for months on this forum!!! It is so nice to finally see someone else talking about the benefits....you seem very well informed about it's effects too!!! I have high Prolactin and have researched the relationship between Prolactin and Progesterone, you are right!!! My question now is do I need to continue on Dostinex if I am using Progesterone cream....I can't ask my dr. because he has scoffed at the idea of using natural progesterone, but I think it is wonderful!!!! I am also taking Vitex since it works directly on the pituitary. My fear is that I am doing too much??! I'd love to stop the perscription, but am worried that my Prolactin will go up again. Are you on Dostinex??? Good luck to you, I too am hoping that July is my month, after 21/2 years ttc!!!!

TS!! It is so great to hear that you have used prog cream, also. I have urged others to use it as well, it can't hurt. I have done a lot of research on natural remedies and I have learned a lot in the past 6 mo. My prolactin level was 19 when first tested (too high) and 29 on retest. RE wanted to give me some prescipt. but I asked for prog instead (I had already read up on it). He said "if that is what you want", and gave me 14 days of prog. vag. suppository. I didn't get pg and didn't go back. I have been using prog cream for 6 mo. I also have hypothyroidism and discovered that is also effected by prog. After using prog cream for 2 mo. I tested 10 prolactin - no test for prog. But the suprising thing is that my TSH has gone down also, reducing my need for meds for hypothyroid. About over doing it with both the cream and Dostinex, it is my understanding that the only way to "overdose" on progesterone is the prog pill which can cause dizziness and maybe low blood pressure. Dostinex only reduces prolactin, which allows your body to produce the needed progesterone instead of suppressing it's production. So I don't think both cream and Dostiex will hurt. How long have you been taking Dostinex? I don't have any experience with it, but from what I have read here, you take it for a time then stop b/c it has done it's job. But if you are concerned, ask your doctors office to run another test. Maybe use the cream after you have finished your presciption to keep prolactin down to a normal level. Vitex works mainly to increase LH, which signals a mature egg to be released; and it helps to regulate all hormones, but I don't think Vitex has a direct effect on prog. it just "encourages" your body to harmonize and do what it should. That is just my take on it all. Don't go by that as fact. I asked my RE what he thought about natural remedies and he said that he didn't trust them b/c he didn't know anything about them. I though that was a very closed-minded. My GP told me once that vit C has not been proven to help your body in any way. I changed GP's after that office visit. Most "doctors" don't like natural remedies b/c they have pharmaceutical companies telling them they are bad for you. If doctors used natural remedies the pharm. co. would not make money. In Europe, natural med. is used a lot more. Sorry for the book, I guess I had a lot to say.

Hi everyone, I was just put on Bromocriptine on Thursday- and taken immediately off, due to the side effects! I progressively got everyone in a 12 hour period. My Doctor has put me on a much lower dose of Dostinex. My question being, If I have my period every month & ovulate, could something else be wrong if I am ttc? All of my hormones checked out ok- I'm just nervous something else is holding us back! Has anyone else had this problem- If so, please get back to me. I have an fertility monitor, and the only thing I can think of is Prolactin is effecting the days that I ovulate...could this be?

Amber - July 9

Hi Morgan,
Prolactin can really mess things up! Mine was high and all my other hormones fine as well and I did ovulate and had my period each month, but it was so hard to track and never regular each month. Like you I tried Bromocriptine and it was nasty stuff...I was sick on it more than I felt good. Now I am on dostinex and I feel great. My periods are regular after only 2 months and my prolactin is perfect. Give yourself some time on it and I am sure you'll have good results if your prolactin is the only thing holding you back! Good luck!
