You Are What You Eat
While much has been written about healthy eating for female fertility, far less attention has been given to the man's diet for fertility. There are active lifestyle changes and diet changes that men can take to try to improve their chances for fertility. Here, we explore a number of these options. Keep in mind, of course, that not every recommendation will make a difference for every person.
Oysters!
This is actually not a myth. There is a recommendation to eat oysters because of their zinc content. Don't despair, however, if you don't like oysters. Any foods that are rich in zinc will help you to keep your sperm count up. These include lean beef, wheat germ and dark-meat turkey, among others.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is great for increased sperm count and for motility. This means that you can take Vitamin C tablets, or make sure to eat foods that are rich in vitamin C such as oranges, strawberries and citrus juices.
Lycopene
A lycopene supplement may help to get rid of free oxygen radicals that you have in your system. Free oxygen radicals are one of the main causes of male infertility, and lycopene is known to get rid of these free radicals. You can find lycopene in supplements, but you can also get them in tomatoes and tomato-based foods.
Herbs
In addition to recommendations for certain types of food, there are also recommendations for herbs that may help to increase fertility. The Chinese herbs ginseng, saw palmetto, astral Gus and macaw are all known to help to increase sperm count. Some of these herbs can be quite powerful, however, and it is important to talk to your doctor before beginning any herb routine.
Foods to Avoid
Along with foods that are good for you while trying to get pregnant, there are also a number of things that you should avoid. Alcohol can decrease sperm count and motility. The more that you drink, the more detrimental the influence of alcohol may be. Coffee should also be avoided when trying to get your partner pregnant. One study in Italy showed that an increase in coffee consumption led to a decrease in sperm effectiveness. You should avoid fish that contain mercury, including shark, swordfish, marlin, king mackerel, tile fish and albacore tuna.
Remember that it is always helpful to keep to a healthy diet and a consistent exercise routine. Try to avoid stress as much as possible, as it can lead to fertility issues as well. Good luck trying these tips and looking forward to increasing your chances of conceiving a beautiful baby!
