Amyell428, I'd be interested to know if your Dr took you off Metformin. My Dr's nurse called because they were monitoring my blood to make sure my hormones were on the rise as they should be and she told me to go off of the Metformin and just keep taking the Progesterone twice a day. I called her back and said unless there were reasons why I shouldn't be on it, from the research I'd done myself it significantly lowered my risk of miscarrying again - did your Dr keep you on it? Through the whole pregnancy or just the first trimester?
I have to go in for an ultrasound next week, then I'll be about 7 weeks - I'm just curious.
Thanks, Dana

I have been on metformin for a year at 1500mg a day for my PCOS and I have never really had any side effects but just yesterday my doctor upped my prescription to 2500mg a day and I have been feeling naseous all day and just basically feeling horrible all around. Are these normal side effects for metformin??

Danam-- i was on Metformin for 4 months before i got pregnant. when i got pregnant i stayed on it for 14 weeks. I have a healthy baby. When i got pregnant without Metformin i miscarried at 6 weeks. I would stay on it for at least the first trimester, no matter what your doc says, or get a new doc. PCOS patients have an over 50% miscarriage rate w/out Metformin and with Metformin reduces miscarriage rate to 11%. IT WILL NOT HURT YOUR BABY, rather have a bay with the risks than no baby at all.

Thanks GBaby, I talked to my Dr and decided to stay on it. I called the Mother Risk hotline which is a hotline out of Toronto's Sick Kids Hospital and they said there was no increased risk, so I decided to stay on it. I had my first ultrasound today at 6 weeks and found out I'm having TWINS...identical - OMG!

Hello. I was diagnosed w/ PCOS Feb '07. I had irregular cycles about every other month for 2 years after coming off birth control and having a miscarriage (I've actually had 4 total miscarriages and one live birth). We are still trying to conceive. My gyno put me on clomid from Mar to July '07. We got pg on the last cycle and it ended in miscarriage. She sent me to a specialist. He put me on metformin I'm supposed to start taking tonight. Then clomid tomorrow for day 3 to 7. I am very encouraged by what I have read here about success rates of others on the metformin. I will also keep praying for those of you who have yet to conceive. Hugs and to all.

Hi, My name is Aurora. I read this column everyday, but this is the first time I'm responding. I have been on metformin for about 7 months. I would say my mentruals are regular with a day or 2 off. But I have not gotten pregnant. It's gotten to the point that I'm so depressed. Like if this doesnt work, what is my next option. I'm working on the weight issue hoping that something will change, but nothing. I read how other people have been on it for months and get pregnant but not me. Please help me, I need to see the light of the end of the tunnel.

My hubby and I have been trying for about a year or so.. I just switched OB's /c my first dr was drawing blood and running the wrong tests. My new dr is the one that said I have PCOS... Any info would be helpful as I do not know much about PCOS. Thanks! Hopeful.. ELK

terrasmama... did the doc check you for anything be4 putting you on metformin. I ask b/c i have had 4 early mc's and all the bloodwork, and HSG are coming back fine. Doc won't test me for PCOS, but I fear I may have it b/c of irregular cycles. I have been reading about metformin and want to try it, wondering what tests are done to see if you need it.

SaintRose, all my doc did was do some b/w. I don't know what specifically he looked for. I know thyroid was checked. But I also have pcos so I don't know if this may be typical treatment for pcos. From what I have read it is. Pcos is caused by "insulin resistance" and to help counteract that I was prescribed Metformin.

Hi Saintrose, My dr did a whole bunch of blood tests and found out that I have to much of the male in me.. He said that my thyroid was fine but, that my insulin level was very high. He also belives that I am not ovluating either.. I have been off the pill for over a year now and I have only gotten my "cycle" once or twice but, nothing like when I was on the pill.. He really belives that I am not ovluating.. I am suppose to see him next month and that is when he said we would try the Clomid... Does anyone else on the metformin get really sick and have to be in the bathroom all the time?? Thanks to everyone! ELK :)
