I was diagnosed with benign pituitary tumor a few years ago when I went for fertility treatment for the first time. I was put on parlodel which brought prolactin down to a reasonable level. I got pregnant 2 months ago and didn't know whether or not I should stop using the med. My doctor was not sure either and sought the assistance of a specialist. He suggested that I stopped the med immediately. I was taking 2 tablets a day. My concern is could the level go up again since I am no longer taking the med and if so would this cause a complication to the pregnancy. Also does anyone know if there is a safe med out there that can be used to both keep the prolactin level low and preserve the pregnancy.

YES! You can use natural progesterone cream during pregnancy. Progesterone suppresses prolactin and it helps to prevent m/c, morning sickness, and post pardum depression. You can get it over the counter (w/o prescription). I get mine at early-pregnancy-test.com. I highly recommend it to anyone already pregnant.

After a long time with no cycles, I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor in November 2003 and prolactin levels over 100. My doctor at the time presented me the options of two medicines Dostinex or Parlodel. I was told Parlodel has alot of side effects. I chose the Dostinex for that reason and within two months I had a cycle. After six months my doctor took me off the medicine and once again my cycles stopped. I began the Dostinex again in September 2004. This time I was to take medicine for a year but after 9 months I became pregnant. I am not familiar with Bromocriptine but I do know the Dostinex worked and I did not have any side effects. I am concerened about the tumor and prolactin levels and how they could affect my pregnancy but so far I am three months along and doing good. One thing I have learned through all this is that it is more common in women than I thought. Before two years ago I have never heard of anyone going through this and of course the mention of the word tumor is enough to scare anyone. From reading of all your comments I feel that the Dositnex is the way to go especially for those who want to conceive. Best of luck to all of you.

Amber, thanks for the response and encouragement. I've been on bromocriptine for a month now but I am starting to feel lousy (tired, headaches, and my contacts are really dry). My appt isn't until Oct. Should I wait this out and let my body adjust? How often should levels be checked? I'm so anxious to get my levels back to normal because I would like to try to get preg by year end. My endocronologist (he has no personality) was not very encouraging about getting pregnant but I am hoping there is still a possibility.

aksa - you should not start using the cream until the day after ovulation, so you really need to know when that is. The best way is to chart BBT, or you can use opt to indicate ovulation. After you are certain that you O'd, you use the cream twice a day for 12-14 days only. During that time if you have had symptoms of high prolactin (tender bbs, PMS, etc) in the past, you should not experience them using the progesterone cream. If you were asking about when your prolactin levels go down, it would probably depend on how high it was to start with. Prolactin inhibits the production of progesterone and vice versa, so if your body gets the progesterone (through the cream) that it needs, it in turn will suppress the production of prolactin. Each month it should get better. Mine went from 29 to 14 in 2 months. It has now been 6 months and I will be tested again next week. I hope I was able to answer you question.

I am glad to hear that Blandine and Rhonda were able to bring their levels down with Parlodel and get pregnant. I am wondering why Hockey Girl is on a half pill in the am and a half in the pm ? I was told to take a full pill in the am and a full 2.5 mg pill in the pm. I started 2 weeks ago and have been nauseus for the past week. My doc (one of the best obs in Beverly hills California) told me that if I can't tolerate it then he wqould switch me to Dostinex or it could actually be absorbed vaginally since its so powerful. Has anyone heard of this? I do have the pit tumor (they call it an adenoma) and 107 prolactin. I am anxious ot get pregnant since i just got married a year ago and am 37 y.o. Also, someone asked about stopping it while pregnant. My doc told me I would stop it as soon as I get pregnant and may not be able to breastfeed and would likely have to go back onit to keep prolactin down and keep tumor small after pregnancy. Hope this info helps.

Nicky-It seems like you have been on bromocriptine for a few months. I'm curious how it is working for you? I'm thinking that if I continue to feel this much nausea I will ask my doc tgo switch me to dostinex. He told me that he put me on bromocriptine b/c its a more researched medicine then dostinex (which is newer) and the studies have shown it to be effective for women ttc.

Amber - July 20

Hi Ladies! :)
Nicky...to be honest, I didnt adjust well for Bromocriptine....I was on it for 2 years and I never felt really good. Near the end of it I would wake up through the night half choking on vomit (sorry for being so graphic) but for me I really didn't like it. I have my prolactin checked every 6 month and it never stayed down to a normal level the entire time. I had been on Dostinex for only about a month and was tested again and my levels are perfect. It's been soooo long since I had a regular period...I had no clue when I was ovulating because some months I'd go 50 days without a period. NOW..it's text book periods! It's amazing! I started exactly on the 28th day....my period lasted 7 days....and this has been the case for the past 2 months. It's exciting to know that it really can happen this month because I am like clockwork now...I know when I ovulate unlike before where it was just a shot in the dark. This will be my first month trying since my levels are normal so fingers crossed!!! :)) If you are looking to get pregnant by the end of the year - it can happen with the Dostinex...it's works fast!! Ask your doctor about it in October...or try to get another appointment for sure! Maybe we have the same endocronologist - mine knows his stuff but couldn't have cared less about my priority of having a family...he kept putting me off until I my last appointment when I pretty much told him for the 100th time that I want a baby NOW and that I was going to do whatever it took to have one with or without his help....he's helping now! :)) Just go in there...know your fact...and be upfront!
Welll....I think I just wrote a novel...but if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! :))

Tiffany Jo - July 22

Hi friends! I am 30 years old and have one child. In August 2004, I went off the birth control patch so my husband and I could try to concieve again. Six months went by and I never started my period and my breasts were very tender. I was also producing small amounts of breast milk and I would notice tingling in my nipples if I bent over or with manipulation. It kind of felt like the "milk letdown" sensation when you breast feed. After six months, I finally had my prolactin level checked and it was at 73. My OB ordered an MRI which revealed a prolactinoma. The tumor is a microadenoma (less than 1 cm). My doctor assured me it was benign and started me on bromocriptine. I titrated my doses on my own. I first took 1/4th of a tab at night for 2 nights, then 1/4th of a tab in the am and pm, and eventually got up to 1/2 a tab in the am and pm. The only side effects I noticed was nausea if I took the med on an empty stomach and some dizziness. I also saw an endocrinologist. He ordered all kinds of labs to make sure the tumor wasn't effecting any other hormones. All of my other labs came back normal. After taking bromocriptine for 1 month, my prolactin level came down to 19, my sex drive was returned to normal, my breast tenderness went away, and I started my period. My endocrinologist at that time took me off of the bromocriptine for one month and my level returned to 69. I am going to start Dostinex because of the easier dosing schedule and claims of lower side effects. My concern is that I want to get pregnant. My doctor told me that I would stop the medicine as soon as I get pregnant, but what happens if my prolactin level goes haywire during the pregnancy? I understand my prolactin level will increase, but at what point is it dangerous? Are people with high prolactin level more prone to miscarrage? It is also my understanding that there are no studies in humans to show if taking Dostinex or Bromocriptine during pregnancy affects the fetus. Does anybody have any info to share?
