high PROLACTIN levels

I have not had any spotting with high prolactin.I should ask the RE about taking progesterone. I was told that even though you may ovulate regularly with high prolactin ,you could have implantation problems. That gets one to thinking that progesterone may be a big help in the luteal phase. any thoughts?

Hello,
I went to the RE for the 1st time yesterday. She did not focus on the prolactin level too much, she said that she will continue to monitor it but feels that further investigation is required before an action plan can be set (cover all the basis). I have an MRI for thie Friday. One June 20th I have a sonohysteroscopy. One July 4th I have an endometrial biopsy. My DH has to submit 3 different semen samples for different tests. While we were there yesterday we both had our blood drawn for further tests. I had an external and internal u/s & a vaginal exam/smear to check for infections I guess. So after all these tests are done we meet with her again on July 26th to review the results and set forth an action plan. I got the impression that she wasn't overly concerned about the prolactin yet not dismissing it. I think she wants to check my ability to ovulate well and check my progesterone levels. So no meds were given to me at the 1st appt.

hi jyot- welcome to this board. I find it comforting to come on here when I am down - I hope you do too. It sounds great that your level has dropped! Your situation sounds like mine- I have been through HSG and all other tests as well- and we even achieved a pregnancy before they found prolactin was high but I lost it early. That was 16 months ago! My cycles are also becoming more regular- so we are in the same boat. Hang in there and come on here with any questions. It does make you feel better when someone announces their pregnancy- I am also 31 ttc #1 and started taking bromo in January 2006. Very similar! My level last time we checked was 6.1- orig. it was 29.5. what scale does your doctor use? What is considered normal to them? I have found that docs use different ones- my doc wanted mine to be below 16. It has been since Feb but it still hasnt happenend!! Keep in touch! Brooke

jyot- Welcome, did your dr. send you to get an mri? My ob didn't, but I just made an appointment with an re for a second opinion.

jyot - June 8

Hi Brooke, thanks for your response. You are right that it feels good to know someone else shares the same situation, although I hope we have better stories to tell soon. As for Prolactin yes, i was told the normal levels are some where below 20 (miu?). I am not sure about the unit. Mine are at 25.6. Hopefully Dostinex will do the trick. I will keep you all posted.

Hi bl, I wasn't asked to get an MRI because the RE explained that my levels were not in the tumor range and in any case he felt the medication would reduce the levels. Anyway its a good idea to get a second opinion from an RE. Thank you ladies. -jyot

Hi everyone. I just got my blood results back after one month of using bromo. My prolactin went from 26 to 21.9. My ER says it needs to be below 20. So... he requested I take bromocriptine twice a day now. I'm so sad. I even thought I had ovulated, but blood results say no.
As for taking clomid.... I got nauseous, moody and had severe pain on both sides from the hyperstimulation of my ovaries. But... it did work, I did ovulate....but none of that matters if the prolactin is high. It seems like this bromo is working pretty slowly.

Holland,thanks for info on clomid.
how did you know that you ovulated? Is it with the LH kits or with blood tests and what kind or with ultrasound. I am just anxious.

jyot, I knew I ovulated because I was in pain...Also, I was very carefully tracking my temp. (BBT) with a BBT thermometer (can get them at CVS) and sure enough my temp. dipped the day of ovulation and jumped up and stayed up for the luteal phase.... it was actually really, really neat. I'm sure you could get on line and get a sample chart from somewhere. You should start the temps when you start the clomid and just continue... in about 1-14 days your temp should drop very low and then jump to the highest it has been... in the 98.0 areas and stay up. It won't do you any good to just take the clomid and have intercourse.... you need to wait for those specific days.... and you can do so by tracking your temp. Let me know if you have any other questions....

holland - June 14

sorry jyot... that was 11-14 days not 1-14 days.

I am new here, but wanted to write. My prolactin levels have been high, but have been dropping. Last month it was at 25 and this month 21. My cd21 test showed that my progesterone was high (25.5). I have been taking prometrium to help regulate my cycle, as I was getting it every 10 days, and been on prometrium for two cycles now, and both have been regular. Anyone else in the same or similar situation? Feeling down, been ttc for 1 1/2 years, already have a three year old, and had no problem with him....

I hope we hear some good news from you soon. That will be encouraging. Thanks for info Holland..

Hi jyot- thanks for asking about me. I am 7 dpo and IUI. This a.m. I had blood tests for progesterone and estradiol- which both were good. Prog is at 16.4, estradiol is 197. I have another week to wait it out. I haven't tried clomid yet but I have a feeling that will be next to try. Good luck with your clomid cycle! I have heard good things about trying clomid and IUI- and the first try being successful. I hope it works for you- keep in touch. Brooke

Hi Ladies,
i just got a call from the obgyn and they got my MRI results and are referring me to an endocrinologist. I'm a little freaked out, I didn't think they would really find anything wrong. God I hope it is just something in the pituitary gland that can be corrected with medication. I'm a bit scared as they didn't tell me what the results said.

bciervo - June 22

Rachel5- I can't believe they didn't tell you the results. I find that odd. You should call them and ask for them- I'm sure though that everything is fine. Even if you have a pit tumor, they are always benign and very small. Most likely you will be put on bromo to reduce it which will also bring down your prolactin level. What is your level last time you checked? I see that your doc wasn't overly concerned with the level- whatever it is, everything will be fine. Please keep us posted. Brooke
