For Drew:
I read stuff like this too however when i told my doc i was pregnant she told me to stop taking it. She said as i conceived whilst taking the metformin the egg would be stronger than with a natural conception ie no drugs. she said the chance of m/c would be the same as anyone else.... still with all the info on the net who can u trust...but is it reliable. I live in the UK and all the research seems to be available in the USA but not here. i am reluctant to start taking it again incase something happens

I have PCOS and was on METFORMIN for about 6months and fell pregnant quite quick as soon as my cycle was regular again. But when i found out i was pregnant at 6 weeks my doctor took me off metformin as in paperwork it says research is still being down and should would not allow me to continue on it while pregnant. i agrued with her and told her i read heaps on it and if i am not on it i am higher risk of miscarriage and if i stay on it the whole way i should be able to conceive a normal baby. but going over metformin then that means my levels are not right then and i think would be harm to baby as if i am not right then baby is not right. Anyway got to 12 weeks scan and i had a miscarriage. it was so horrible. went and seen my doctor yesterday after getting out of hospital and NOW SHE SAYS NEXT TIME SHE WILL KEEP MY ON METFORMIN THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH THE PREGNANCY so it doesn't interfer with my levels and then upset baby. so my advice is, if you fall pregnant while on metformin, tell your doctor that you are staying on it no matter what. cause if you come off it then you levels will not be correct and then can cause miscarrige to your baby. hope this helps people. just a shame i had to go through a miscarriage first people doctor said its a good idea if i stay on it now so levels stay normal all the way through pregnancy.

Nicole, thank you so much for sharing this info!!! I'm not sure if I am pg yet or not this cycle, but I just want to be prepared in the event that God willing I am. And from what I've seen in the research, what you said is exactly true. Thank you so much, and good luck!

Hi Marie, everyone is different. I've heard some people say the first month worked for them, then I've heard many say it was the second cycle that worked. As for side effects, those vary between people too. I'm on 100mg Clomid cd 3-7, and 850mg Metformin twice a day. When I took the Clomid the only real side effect I noticed (and my family) was moodiness. As for the Metformin, I have noticed nausea and gassiness (not sure I spelled that right, but you know what I mean!) Any way, like I said everyone is different! Good luck!

For Nicole - Thanks for the advice nicole but now i am in two minds about what to do!! I keep reading about people having miscarriage. i am in my 6th week now and i really love this baby already and really hope it works out. i am just so scared about losing it. i dont want to over exert myself, i feel i should trust my gp when she says to stay of metformin, but do u think i should get 2nd opinion. i really am confused now!! x

trying to get pregnant - June 8

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries March 4th of 2005 and my Dr put my on metformin and this is June and I missed Mays period. But before this I had 2 miscarriages in 2002 at 6 weeks and I don't know why I lost the 2 that I did. We hope that I am pregnant this time..

Michelle - June 9

I was put on Metformin for PCOS in Jan 05. In April 05 the Dr upped the dose to 2000mg per day and in May I had a period. In June I was pregnant! I am not sure how far along I amm, but my guess is 4-5 weeks.

Drew - June 9

Michelle, thats great news! I'm on 1700mg/day, (plus clomid) and I started May 5. Never got pg that time, but I'm hoping that this is the month! Did you have really bad side effects from that high a dose of Metformin?

lucille - June 19

I was told by my doctor today that I have PCOS. I have been trying for 3yrs now to get pregnant but have been unable to. I was put on metformin to try to get pregnant. I have always heard that with PCOS you dont have normal periods and that is why it is difficult to get pregnant but my cycle is pretty well normal. usually 26-30 day cycle. Will metformin help me. The doctor says if that doesnt work within a few cycles he wants to put me on a combo of metformin and clomid. If that is unsuccessful he wants to do a sperm count on my husband but he said we would wait on that because more than likely the infertility is due to my PCOS. Im keeping my fingers crossed that the metformin works for me. The doctor said he has had better results with the metformin than with fertility drugs in women with PCOS. Good luck to everyone!!!

WEll I have now been on MET for 8 months. I ahve lost over 40 pounds and my appetite has decreased tremendously. I have had my menstrual cycle regular now(30 day cycle)and have been on Clomid 100mg now for 3 months. Tommorrow I take my last Clomid for this month. I am hoping that my body is adjusting and regulating and that within this summer I am pregnant. If I am not then I will go to further fertility specialists as My Gyno has said he does not go over Prescribing the 100mg clomid. I wish you all Luck and LOTS of BABY DUST!!!!

I was on metmorfin for less than 3 weeks and I ovulated!!!! prior to that I had only ovulated 3 times on my own! For me it is a miracle drug. Everyone is different I guess but I got pregnant the first month on it.

Joanne, I am on a group in Yahoo called Metformin Miracles and most of the women in the group have taken metformin and gotten pregnant. Some quickly, some up to 1 year of trying. I have been taking Metformin for almost 2 months. Some of the women had m/c the first pregnancy with met. But, They seem to carry to full term if they continue to take met throughout the pregnancy or at least throu the first trimester.

Maria - July 4

Hi! My dr. put me on metformin in Jan. I was on 500mg/day for a week and then went to 500mg/twice a day. I got pregnant in April and was taken off the drug immediately...I've since been on progesterone suppositories, I need to take two capsules/night for 12 weeks. It was either the suppositories or HCG shots every 3 days. I didnt think I was comfortable enuff to give myself shots (altho they were only sub Q) so I opted for the suppositories. I'll be 3 months on July 4! Good luck and baby dust to all!
